In the 1800's Yankton was noted to have "6 saloons for every one church." Of course with it's river highway many people passed through here, as well as many stops by the military and Calvary. This traffic attracted its share of ladies of questionable character. The Suite Dreams Location was said to have a billiard room on main level with "several sleeping rooms" above. The second floor hallway is quite large 7 ft across with a massive skylight above. Several small rooms with screen doors had originally aligned the hallway. One has surmised the large hallway once presented itself as a kind of waiting area. As we have named the suites in the River Rose after the board of directors of the bank, we have named the suites here for the ladies who worked in another kind of financial field.
Our first suite is named for a madam who was very well liked, Madam Maria Briggs. In her obituary, it is said she was a woman of kindly impulses, considerable intelligence and held wide acquaintances. Her fortune is said to amount to 35,000 at her death. This was quite a sum at time when 2.00 a week was considered a good wage. She passed from a relapse of typhoid fever.
